Employee Motivation

motivation carrotAsset Management involves three types of assets; Physical, Financial, and Human. People are the most valuable asset that an organization has because people make the other assets work . Leading and motivating people to perform at top level will cause your other assets to perform at that same level.

So, how do you motivate your employees? Do you use your status influence? Do you resort to intimidation and threats? or do you motivate using a friendly approach?…. promise more pay, more bonus,or even hang the carrot of promotion?  These are all techniques supervisors and managers’ use, some of which you may have experienced first hand. However here is how you can create an energized workforce that is motivated to perform at high level.

  1. Recognition – People want to be recognized not only for the big goals that they accomplish but for the little struggles, obstacles, and aggravations that they had to overcome to accomplish the big things. The more immediate the recognition is the more effective it is.
  2. Engagement – Engage employees not only in the leg work but in sharing their opinions and ideas, thoughtfully consider these ideas, and communicate your decisions around these ideas.. People want to know that they are important to the organization.
  3.   Alignment – for employees to be most productive their goals should be aligned with the organizational goals and they have to see how.  People want to know how they are making a difference.
  4. Accountability – is a process that is imbedded in everyday activities to ensure things are going according to plans and uncover potential obstacles that may hinder the employees’ effort.  It is also a periodic, agreed upon upfront, process to assess how well employees are accomplishing their long term goals. This process should be more frequent than those dreaded end of year evaluations.
  5. Reward – You may have heard this before and it is generally true; Money is not typically an issue unless employees know that they are not compensated fairly as compared to their peers. Therefore ensure that your reward system is competitive and reflective of the level of effort being put forth. In addition your incentive programs should be designed to encourage the type of results and behaviors you want to see.
